The Chicago BBQ Company
Takes First Place at the 29th Annual Best in the West Nugget Rib Cook-Off

Reno/Sparks, Nevada – First place honors at the 2017 Best in the West Nugget Rib Cook-Off in Sparks, Nevada went to the Chicago BBQ Company from Burr Ridge, IL. 22 of the country’s top competitive, large volume barbecue teams competed for the coveted first place prize at the event. This is the 29th year of the six-day event, heralded as the most prestigious and popular rib cooking competition in the nation.

This year’s first place winner, Chicago BBQ Company, is owned by Tom Ferguson, and is a BBQ expert. Tom had a vision of creating Chicago’s ultimate BBQ experience, after retiring from owning a chain of Italian restaurants in suburban Chicagoland. In 1985, Tom started competing in national Rib Cook-Offs.  Then in 1986, the Chicago BBQ Company won the title of The Best Ribs in the World at the Richmond World Invitational Rib Cook-Off and the awards started flowing in.  With over 300 national and local awards, Tom is still going strong.  He also has the bragging rights of winning over ten awards at the Best in the West Nugget Rib Cook Off.

The top five winners for 2017 are:
First place: Chicago BBQ Company, Burr Ridge, IL $10,000
Second place: Uncle Bub’s, Westmont, IL: $5,000
Third place: Aussom Aussie, Pittsburg, PA: $2,000
Fourth Place: Carson City BBQ, Carson City, NV: $1,000
Fifth Place: Austin’s Texas Lightning BBQ, Burr Ridge, IL:  $500
Best Sauce: Uncle Bub’s, Westmont, IL: $500
People’s Choice: Back Forty Texas Barbecue, Pleasant Hill, CA: $500

While bragging rights, a trophy and the prize money are great benefits for the winners, they also generally see increased sales at the event the next year.

Nugget To Begin $25 Million Renovation

Nugget Casino Resort To Begin $25 Million Renovation

Reno/Sparks, NV – The Nugget Casino Resort has officially announced the launch of more than $25 million in renovations to the iconic Sparks property, beginning in January, 2017.

“We have already made significant property improvements over the last several months,” said Anthony Marnell III, owner of Marnell Gaming. “The next steps are major upgrades to the west tower hotel rooms and the entire 110,000 sq. ft. of convention space.”

The west hotel tower at the Nugget was opened in late 1996 and only minor changes have been made since that time. Marnell plans to completely remake nearly 800 rooms from floor-to-ceiling to provide contemporary luxury, comfort and upgraded amenities such as Keurig brand coffee makers in every room. The stylish new rooms will be highlighted by a “modern lodge” theme and decor.

The renovations to the west tower are scheduled to be completed by June 2017, with hotel room floors opening progressively as they are finished throughout the 1st and 2nd quarters of 2017.

Concurrently with the west tower improvements, the main convention center on the second floor of the Nugget will be completely renovated in two phases. The first phase begins in mid-February, with completion anticipated by late March.  The second phase is scheduled to start in early May and be completed in late June.

The convention center improvements include all new carpet, wall treatments, paint, fixtures, lighting and electrical upgrades throughout the convention space complex as well as significant upgrades to the banquet kitchen facility and all food service equipment.   Approximately $2 million has already been invested in modern service-ware ranging from banquet equipment to food service stations.

“Completely remodeling the west tower rooms and convention center reflects our commitment to making the property a market leader, and this is just the beginning of the Nugget makeover--there will be much more to come toward the end of 2017 and into 2018,” said Marnell. “The people of Northern Nevada have always supported the Nugget and we intend to make this a property the community can be proud of now and for years to come.”

WHEN: Saturday, December 3, 2016, 5:30 p.m.
WHERE: Victorian Avenue, Sparks – In front of Nugget Oyster Bar entrance

Reno/Sparks, Nevada – The Nugget Casino Resort is inviting the community to celebrate the start of the Christmas season in an extravagant way with its inaugural lighting ceremony of the biggest tree in Nevada (and possibly the nation) on Saturday, December 3, beginning at 5:30 p.m.

The tree could possibly be the tallest fresh-cut Christmas tree on display in the nation this holiday season. The giant tree has been measured to be taller than the trees on display at the White House and the tree in Rockefeller Center. The enormous tree is a majestic 105’ tall White Fir, found about 30 miles outside of Klamath Falls, Oregon.

“The Christmas tree is massive!” said Lisa Jansen, Director of Special Events and Entertainment with the Nugget Casino Resort. “This tree from the Marnell Family and Nugget Casino Resort is dedicated to our community. We hope the tree will attract people to downtown Sparks as a place to gather and celebrate the holidays. You will be able to see the tree from miles away, but the best view will be right down here on Victorian Square.”

The tree-lighting ceremony will be the official kickoff to the 12 Nuggets of Christmas holiday season of giving event that will run nightly from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. from December 3 until December 14.

Democratic Pig Representative Wins Presidential Pig Race at the Best in the West Nugget Rib Cook-Off

Sparks, NV, September 1, 2016 - The Nugget Casino Resort held its third edition of the election year, “Presidential Pig Race” to unofficially predict the winner of the 2016 run for the White House. The Democrat “Clinton” representative pig won the race by nearly a full length.

It was a fast track as pigs wearing blue “Clinton” and red “Trump” colors scampered alongside two running mates in the contest. The race has been held during the Best In The West Nugget Rib Cook-Off for the last three election years. In 2008 the “McCain” narrowly defeated the “Obama” pig, but in 2012 the “Obama” pig beat the “Romney” pig by a snout. The margin of error for the race is 50% for predicting America’s next Commander in Chief.

“We have a lot of fun with the race every election year,” said Randy Kennedy, Director of Marketing Communications at the Nugget Casino Resort. “It’s a great way to add some levity during an intense political season.”

#1 Competitive Eater Joey Chestnut Reclaims Title at Nugget World Rib Eating Championship

Joey “Jaws” Chestnut downs 9.6 pounds of ribs in 12 minutes; Last year’s champ, Matt “Megatoad” Stonie finishes second with 7.8 pounds.

Reno/Sparks, Nevada –Joey Chestnut, the world’s No.1-ranked competitive eater, retook the first place trophy and his ninth World Rib Eating title, placing first by nearly two pounds at the 11th Annual Championship during the 28th Annual Best in the West Nugget Rib Cook-Off.

Chestnut, the world top ranked competitive eater, consumed a gut-busting 9.6 pounds of St. Louis style pork rib meat during the marathon 12-minute contest. He still holds the world record for the highest amount of rib meat consumed at the annual event. He polished off over 13 pounds in 2013. Chestnut secured the $2,500 cash grand prize for his eating prowess, scoring his ninth win in eleven years of the event.

Second-place finisher and world number two-ranked eater, Matt “Megatoad” Stonie consumed an impressive 7.8 pounds during the competition, eclipsing the third place finisher by a full three pounds.

In third place, with 4.8 pounds, was Rich “The Locust” LeFevre. LeFevre is 76 years old and has enjoyed an impressive career on the Major League Eating circuit. He has placed in the top five multiple times at the Nugget World Rib Eating Championship.

Fourth place went to Steve Hendry, the number 16 ranked eater who downed 3.6 pounds and fifth place went to contest newcomer and Reno-Sparks local D. Brian Burghart, a University of Nevada Reno instructor who has also been a Rib Cook-Off judge. Burghart put away two pounds of ribs in his first contest.

The Nugget World Rib Eating Championship is the kick-off event for America’s largest rib cook-off. The Best in the West Nugget Rib Cook-Off is a six-day barbecue festival in Sparks, Nevada where rib fans from all over the country to eat more than 240,000 pounds of ribs cooked by 23 of the nation’s most decorated rib cookers. The cook-off continues through Monday, September 5, 2016.

World Rib Eating Championship and Presidential Pig Race Return to Best in the West Nugget Rib Cook-Off

WHAT: Photo/video/interview opportunity
WHEN: Wednesday, August 31 6:00 p.m. Nugget World Rib Eating Championship
Thursday, September 1, 2016 at 11 a.m. Presidential Pig Race
WHERE: Best in the West Nugget Rib Cook-Off Main Stage

On Wednesday, August 31, 2016 the rib meat will fly as the Reigning rib-eating record-holder Joey Chestnut will compete to regain his title against number-two-ranked eater Matt Stonie at the 11th Annual Nugget World Rib-Eating Championship.

The World Rib-Eating Championship is legendary on the Major League Circuit and will feature the world’s finest competitive eaters, including Gideon Oji, the number-five-ranked eater, who has consumed 25.5 16oz of kale in 8 minutes; Rich LeFevre, who has consumed six pounds of SPAM in 12 minutes; and Steve Hendry, who is a chewing-eating specialist from California.

The competitor who downs the most rib meat from the bone in 12 minutes will be crowned the Best in the West Nugget Rib-Eating Champion and will win the lion’s share of the $5,000 cash purse. At last year’s event, Stonie downed 10.5 pounds of ribs during the 12-minute contest, unseating longtime rib champion, Chestnut. Chestnut still currently holds the world record of 13.76 pounds of pork rib meat in 12 minutes.

“Competitive rib eating in 2016 is the direct descendant of thousands of years of human evolution,” says MLE emcee Sam Barclay. “At the 11th Annual Nugget World Rib-Eating Championship, the greatest eaters in the world must call upon their ancient ancestors, their distant relatives who sat huddled, terrified, crudely gnawing meat from bone, without the cool balm of science to explain their savage lot. MLE’s best will need to embrace their primal self, their unstructured soul, to win here."

On Thursday, September 1, The Nugget Casino Resort is putting the “pork” in politics for the 3rd edition of the Presidential Pig Race at 11:00 a.m. at the Best In the West Nugget Rib Cook-Off main stage.

The pig races only take place during election years, so you don’t want to miss this opportunity! In a completely unscientific method of predicting America’s next Commander in Chief, two adorable piglets dressed to represent “Donald Trump” and “Hillary Clinton” will race, oinking for your vote. Just like the real 2016 Presidential candidates, these little piggies will be pounding the pavement!

“This is one of the most fun things we do at the Rib Cook-Off,” said Lisa Jansen, Director of Special Events and Entertainment with the Nugget Casino Resort. “We love to see the piggies hoof it down the street to try and predict the election outcome .”

Back in 2008, the McCain pig squealed the top spot, while the Obama pig won by a snout in 2012. So sometimes, the pig races are right on point!

Major League Eating (MLE), the governing body of all stomach-centric sports, will host the 11th annual Nugget World Rib Eating Championship at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, August 31, at the Main Stage. The country’s best competitive eaters, including #1-ranked Joey “Jaws” Chestnut and #2-ranked Matt “Megatoad” Stonie will vie for $5,000 in prize money and the title of Nugget World Rib-Eating Champion. MLE conducts more than 90 events annually, including the Nathan’s Famous Fourth of July International Hot Dog Eating Contest in Coney Island, NY. Matt Stonie won the championship in 2015 after eating a gut-busting 10.5 pounds of ribs during the 12-minute contest.

Presidential Pig Race:
Thursday, September 1 at 11 a.m. at the Main Stage
The pig race only takes place during election years, so you don’t want to miss this opportunity! Two adorable piglets, one representing the Republican presidential nominee and one representing the Democratic presidential nominee, will race to see who will win the White House. Back in 2012, the Obama pig won by a snout. So sometimes, the pig races are right on point.

CLASH OF RIVALS, JOEY CHESTNUT AND MATT STONIE, AT THE 11th ANNUAL NUGGET WORLD RIB-EATING CHAMPIONSHIP

$5,000 in Cash Prizes On the Line During Best in the West Nugget Rib Cook-Off

Reigning rib-eating record-holder Joey Chestnut will compete to regain his title against number-two-ranked eater Matt Stonie at the 11th Annual Nugget World Rib-Eating Championship in Sparks, NV.  The event, to be held at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, August 31st, 2016, is part of the 28th annual Best in the West Nugget Rib Cook-Off.

The rib-eating contest will kick off the 28nd Annual Best in the West Nugget Rib Cook-Off, which draws more than 500,000 people each year. Featuring St. Louis style ribs, the contest will conform to the MLE judging model, in which ribs are weighed prior to the contest and then again after the contest to determine the exact amount of rib meat eaten by each competitor.

Corks & Kegs Event to Raise Money for Health Care Education in Nevada

WHEN: Saturday, April 9, 2016; 5 - 8 p.m.

WHERE: Nugget Casino Resort - Nugget Ballroom

TICKETS: $45 pre-sale, $55 day-of-event
WHERE TO BUY: NuggetCasinoResort.com or any local Whispering Vine location

Reno/Sparks, Nevada – Experience live music by Mojo Green and all-you-can-responsibly enjoy wine, beer and spirits for a good cause at the third annual Corks & Kegs wine and craft beer-tasting fundraiser for The NVHCA Perry Foundation on Saturday, April 9, 2016 at 5:00 p.m. at the Nugget Casino Resort.

Proceeds from Corks & Kegs will help support the Nevada Health Care Association’s Perry Foundation’s commitment to improving the quality of care in Nevada’s nursing homes and post-acute care facilities by providing continued education for health care professionals.

“This fun event will help provide The Perry Foundation with critical funding to support the future of post-acute health care in the state of Nevada,” said Robert Kidd, President and CEO of The Perry Foundation.

Since 2014, The Perry Foundation awarded more than 1,000 Continuing Education Units to licensed administrators, executive directors and nurses. In addition, they have provided hundreds of hours of in-services for care facilities and the community. As a result of these actions, the most recent federal rankings show a 23% increase in the number of Nevada’s high-ranking, four and five-star facilities. The new rankings also show a 32% decrease in the number of Nevada’s lowest-ranking one-star facilities.

Nevada’s national ranking dramatically improved in the Families for Better Care’s Nursing Home Report Card – moving up 17 spots in one year - from 43rd to 26th in 2014. This ranking makes Nevada the nation’s “most improved” state when it comes to long-term health care.

The northern Nevada community can help these statistics get even better by supporting the Perry Foundation’s events and, in turn, supporting their mission to keep improving care.

“When you, or a family member, need post-acute or long-term care in Nevada, you want to be sure that the caretakers are properly trained and are committed to providing the best possible care,” said Kidd. “The Perry Foundation is working to make continuing education possible for all of Nevada’s post-acute caretakers.”

Tickets for Corks & Kegs are available at NuggetCasinoResort.com or at any Whispering Vine location in northern Nevada for $45 through April 8. The ticket price will increase to $55 on the day of the event.

Nugget’s Oyster Bar Named Top Seafood Spot In Nevada

Reno/Sparks, Nevada – The Nugget Casino Resort’s Oyster Bar has been named one of the top seafood restaurants in the state of Nevada by OnlyInYourState.com.

“This popular oyster bar offers quality seafood at reasonable prices,” says article author Jennifer Young. “Some of their delicious menu items include seafood Louie, chowder, gumbo, oysters and Lazyman's Cioppino. The portions are large, so make sure you bring along a hearty appetite.”

The Nugget’s Oyster Bar opened in 1964 and specializes in fresh seafood served in a nautical setting. The wait staff is so efficient that many regulars get their favorite dish and drink delivered before they even order.

“Some of our servers have been with the Oyster Bar for years,” said Scott Kidd, Vice President of Food and Beverage with the Nugget Casino Resort. “They know the restaurant inside and out, and don’t skip a beat while serving our regular, and new, customers.”

When the Nugget changed ownership in 2013, the Nugget’s new owners vowed not to change the popular dining spot.

“Locals and visitors alike enjoy the delicious offerings at the Oyster Bar, and it has the same menu and décor as when the ownership change took place,” said Nugget President and CEO Carlton Geer. “The only thing we’ve changed is the carpet.”

The top ten spots were selected by OnlyInYourState.com because “they have the reputation of having the best seafood around.”

Nugget Gives $32,960 To Local Rib Cook-Off Volunteers

Nugget Gives $32,960 To Local Rib Cook-Off Volunteers

MEDIA OPPORTUNITY:

WHAT: Nugget Check Presentation to Reed High School Band for Volunteer Hours Worked
WHEN:  Friday, October 23, at 6:45 p.m., before the game begins
WHERE: Reed High School’s Football Field, in front of the band

Reno/Sparks, Nevada – The Nugget Casino Resort is paying out $32,960 to local community organizations whose volunteers worked at the 2015 Best In the West Nugget Rib Cook-Off. Each year, the Nugget relies on local volunteers to staff its beverage booths and rib-running positions. The Nugget then pays the wages earned by the volunteers directly to their community organizations.

“It’s a great way for the Nugget to give back to the community that supports us,” said Carlton Geer, president and CEO of the Nugget Casino Resort. “It helps the Nugget at the same time, so it’s really a win-win situation.”

This year, the Nugget partnered with 12 local organizations, including Lions Club, Knights of Columbus, Trauma Intervention Program, Spanish Springs High School Band, McQueen High School Band, Mt. Rose Elementary School, eNVision, Veterans Guest House, Rotary Club, Reed High School, Northern Nevada Children’s Cancer Foundation and Sparks High ROTC.

Not only do the volunteers get to raise money for causes that are important to them by earning wages, they also keep the tips. For groups like Reed High School’s band, this opportunity is priceless. The band uses the money they earn at the Best in the West Nugget Rib Cook-Off to purchase new instruments and supplement the cost of travel to competitions.

“We currently have more students than instruments to offer,” said Ron Eichstedt, director of instrumental music at Reed High School. “We at Reed are very excited to have this opportunity because of the Nugget. It’s great to have a local business support their community. The Nugget is an integral part of the Sparks community, and we look forward to a great future with them.”

Reed High School volunteers were one of the top-earners at this year’s event. The Nugget will be presenting volunteers with a giant check before the school’s home football game on October 23, 2015, at 6:45 p.m.

Reno/Sparks, Nevada – The Nugget Casino Resort is proud to announce three new rib cookers participating in the 27th annual Best in the West Nugget Rib Cook-Off. They’ll be competing with 21 other cookers for bragging rights, cash prizes and the chance to become the “Best in the West.”

“We love to mix it up with new cookers every year and give them the chance to compete against the best in the industry,” said Lisa Jansen, director of special events and entertainment. “It also gives people a chance to try new, regional barbecue flavors at the rib cook-off.”

New Logo, Ribster Lunch Planned for the 2015 Best in the West Nugget Rib Cook-Off

Reno/Sparks, Nevada – The 27th annual Best in the West Nugget Rib Cook-Off is just weeks away and the Nugget Casino Resort is debuting a brand new logo for 2015. The Nugget has redesigned the event’s logo each year since the event started.

“The community is always excited when we announce the new design,” said Lisa Jansen, director of special events and entertainment. “It’s fun for us to reinvent our logo each year!”

This year’s logo features a country-western themed pig. The pig, dressed in a cowboy hat and boots, is leaning up against a barrel of top-secret barbecue sauce.

Also new in 2015, the Nugget is adding a special VIP Rib Village Lunch, called Ribster Lunch, on Saturday, September 5.

“We have an overwhelming demand for tables in Rib Village, especially on Saturday night, which is sold out this year,” said Jansen. “Adding the Ribster Lunch on Saturday allows even more people to have the same VIP Rib Village experience with all-you-can-eat ribs and all-you-can-responsibly-drink beverages.”

The only difference – it’s during the day from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. The cost is less, too, at just $75 per person or $700 per table of 10. The Best in the West Nugget Rib Cook-Off’s mascot, Mr. Ribster, will also be making an appearance at the lunch for photo opportunities.

Nugget Casino Resort Begins Noodle Hut Restaurant
and VIP Lounge Renovations

Nugget Casino Resort Begins Noodle Hut Restaurant and VIP Lounge Renovations

Reno/Sparks, Nevada – The Nugget Casino Resort launched new renovations to its popular Noodle Hut
Restaurant and is clearing space for a brand new large limit slot and VIP Lounge area. The latest projects are
part of a long-term multimillion dollar investment plan of continuing improvements initiated by the Nugget’s
new ownership in 2014.

Both renovations are expected to open by early to mid July. The upgraded Noodle Hut will include its familiar
signature menu items plus a large number of additional selections highlighted by fresh sushi. The restaurant
preparation and dining areas will be expanded to accommodate demand. “Given the popularity of the
Noodle Hut, it was a difficult decision to close it during renovations,” said Nugget President and CEO Carlton
Geer, “but I assure you, the final product will be well worth the wait. This renovation is an upgrade that
expands the menu to incorporate sushi, roasted duck, Chinese barbecue pork and more noodle dishes among
other popular Asian foods. ”

Concurrent with the Noodle Hut project, construction crews will be working on a brand new large limit slot
and VIP Lounge area. The new area will be located across from the Advantage Rewards player’s club booth
and next to the Keno lounge on the main casino floor.

“The Nugget has lagged the market in providing a quiet lounge environment for casino players to relax, chat
with friends and generally decompress,” said Geer. “This new lounge will allow us to serve our casino guests
in the manner they deserve.

The new lounge will be accompanied by the addition of a new VIP slots area that will feature the latest
games. Additionally, the entire Table Games area will be enhanced with new carpeting, a more convenient
layout and other general upgrades to the casino floor.”

Nevada based Penta Construction is the contractor with design work performed by the Cuningham Group.
Both Penta and Cuningham have been involved in all of the recent renovation & construction projects at the
Nugget.
